THE POWER OF WORDS PODCAST

Creating a community of practice of scholars of forced migration

Factors such as industrialization of agriculture and land appropriation force many within marginalized communities to migrate in search of better economic opportunities. Development discourse often leverages practices that intensify agricultural output and improve land efficiency as solutions to world hunger, disrupting the livelihoods of rural, indigenous and peasant farmers. In recent years, organizations such as the Landless Workers Movement in Brazil and the Zapatista community in Mexico have mobilized to counteract these development paradigms and reclaim appropriated land. Regrettably, much of the research surrounding these land movements is not easily digestible for students, instructors or local community actors. We propose to create an accessible platform where students and experts can share stories associated with combating the food and agricultural factors that force migration of marginalized communities from Latin America. This platform will consist of interviews, testimonials, and visual aids that will enrich idea-exchange and spur research efforts
